Water for Nature:
Help us provide a precious gift of water
The drought, together with past administration of the Murray Darling
Basin water resources, has left the South Australian River Murray
wetlands in desperate need of water. These wetlands cover vast areas of
habitat for many plants and animals. River Red Gums supporting
threatened parrots, and numerous other bird species, lignum swamps and
reed beds supporting populations of vulnerable frogs and invertebrates,
are drying out. Without a good drenching we may lose these important
habitats.
The
Nature Foundation’s Water for Nature program distributes water,
purchased or donated, to watering projects along the River Murray.
We are keen to attract donations of money or water from the corporate sector and from individuals.
We
work with the SA Murray Darling Basin NRM board to identify community
watering projects that can make best use of the water we have on hand.
We hope to further develop this relationship and undertake more
conservation works within these wetlands.
Information regarding what wetlands have received water from this program is available at Water for Nature’s Watered Wetlands.
Similar in nature to the BushbankSA
revolving fund, donations of cash and water are permanent entitlements
so water is delivered each and every year to the wetlands. Only a small
portion of water is temporarily leased to cover our administration
costs and ensure water continues to get to the areas that need it most.
